When I wanted a new mobile computer (laptop) I looked around a bit and had considered many options from big Power Houses that support virtualization & lots of RAM, to a cheapy to get smashed about like so many of the things I just throw in the truck and let roll about, but then why not keep the old Evo n800v if that is the requirement.
But then I thought to my self what about a Tablet hmmmm I see Grant floating about with his fairly often but for me it is a little big and I would not want to carry it about with me everywhere. Some folk will have noticed this has become an extra appendage and I really do use it for taking notes and other such grown up things not just watching TV Shows and Playing Chess.
So what do I love about the Samsung Q1 Ultra V UMPC:
- Today I did a typing test to discover 26.5 Words a Minute with 87% accuracy and I don't care, why? I have started to use the stylus and have Vista convert to text for me and I'm betting I'm way faster too. What's more it is staring to feel like I'm writing, of course the hand cramp that goes with writing lines is a small tradeoff.
- So it is NOT the QWERTY keyboard I only used it for the first day and not any more.
- The form factor is amazing I really can take it anywhere it ALMOST fits in the pocket of my suit pants, but have only tried that once, when I needed a hand for Beer and a hand for nibbles - out being a Vendor Whore at NetApp Evolution
- I have all the Apps I run in the office:
- Vista
- Office 2007 - Most Important Outlook, Groove and One Note
- Live Writer
- Visio 2007
- Free Mind
- I connect to the cloud many times during the day and on every customer site for:
If you don't know what these do you need to talk to me today.
So not the Tech Review you might be expecting but.... for me it is all about the Pen
Now this is the power of community...
I have been doing some work for a Small Government Agency and today I was asked if I knew why an 8MB file would not go to a contact over the Internet. I checked the SMTP Connectors and couldn't find anything, now we know I'm not the Exchange Guru but I do know that Google Live Search is my friend so off I went. What did I find on the very first page of results Tim Barrett's Post. http://www.nogeekleftbehind.com/2007/07/19/message-is-larger-than-the-current-system-limit/
In short it turns out that there is a 30% Overhead on Attachments over SMTP so you need to increase the limits to take this into account.
You can read Tim's Blog for the details
Things I Learned about NetApps offerings today
- VMWare Site Recovery Integration - New Feature
- Share Point Snap Manager & SAP are new
- NetApp defines Small Mid sized as 100-1000 user
The FAS2020 takes 250 & 270´s place in range but with SATA in main shelf & SAS or Fiber Channel in an expansion shelf. Wow I need to look closer and take Renee up on her offer of more in depth product briefings to see how it compares with the StoreVault S500, this maybe a much better fit in Canberra as it is real NetApp kit but getting closer to the Consumer Model S500 in price.
As with every Evolution session a Partner vendor spoke this time it was River Bed
River Bed: Damien Murphy
How does this work? Steelhead Appliances do WAN De-duplication with a policy of "never send what has been sent before"
Use Scalable Data Referencing
Cold Pass is initial Pass over Wan Just does SDR, Compress & Pass
Warm Pass Local Dedup Passes from Local Device based on stored Data
47 times Faster *Wait for slides before going Deep into Tech *
Steelhead Mobile *Look at this with 50 or 100 for SMB* because it does Tcp Acceleration
*...* Notes for Self
These posts will be updated as I explore the Technology from what ever session I attend in accordance with "I am thinking of starting to blog events I go to Live, and then revisiting the posts when I get a chance to follow up with the speaker. So as usual no warranty all care, subject to change when I find out I missed the point."

As you know I have been keen to drum up some attendance to SMB Focus, because I was keen to see it succeed AND because I believe in a strong SBS Community in AUstralia.
Wayne has been talking about this event for the many years I have known him and I guess he is just shattered to have to Postpone.
May I just ask that if the Special Edition User Group gets legs that you all support it and Wayne, as in my opinion he deserves it.

SMBFocus 2007 Conference Event - Postponed
Wednesday 12th September 2007
SMBFocus 2007 Conference Event
I am thinking of starting to blog events I go to Live and then revisiting the posts when I get a chance to follow up with the speaker so as usual no warranty all care, subject to change when I find out I missed the point.
So here goes
Athena: spoke about MS certification
Key IT Pro take away: 2008 certifications can only be upgraded to through 2003 Certifications so very importantly, Must Consult Someone Experienced (MCSE) 2000-2003 upgrade needs to be done by 31st March 2008.
David Note :- Having gone through the soul destroying one shot only 70-240 experience I might pass and just do the 2008 Exams from scratch
Jeff: talked about SQL 2005 Compact Edition
SQL Server Compact Edition was known as Mobile Edition now can be installed on Desktops.
Replication of data is via an IIS connection to a SQL Server
Files have a 4 GB Limit so file management tools are included to shrink and manage size
Two kinds of Replication
- Remote Data Access - client initiated last write wins
- Merge Replication - Publisher Initiated, built in Conflict Resolution
Securing: Password Protection 40 char no encryption (security theatre because you can read the file and access all data in other ways)
Encrypt the Data RSA 128K
From an Infrastructure standpoint there a wizards that configure IIS.
David Note :- So even DIYers in the SBS end of town would be comfortable deploying the infrastructure
I can see this being a core tech in Mobile Apps moving forward and an Access Migration solution I know we have heard that before
E Learning has some free courses for SSCE
BTW Did we mention it comes in windows Mobile 6.0?
oh yeah great job Guys, it was certainly worth my time and I Learnt something from both of you!
This Month the Canberra Windows Infrastructure User Group had a presentation by Scott Deacon a former manager in the Microsoft Security Response Center (MSRC).
Scott has recently returned home to Canberra to take a role as a Defence resource in the Canberra Branch he went through the Process, the volume of the work the challenges and some war stories
I was very impressed by seeing the process of what was a Very tough Job and of course now I know really what that job was all about I'm Not going to boil down what that team does, to "the reboot team"
Great Presentation I hope I will be able to put some slides up when approved for Public Release or at least pointers to MSRC resources
Welcome home Scott
UPDATE: Slides have been posted here
