Planning my Lab
I have ordered all the kit and am really just awaiting delivery so I have about a week before I start building. At this point I’m thinking that I will build the two servers to be bootable from USB which will let me play with the three main vendors on an as required basis, but really I think it will mostly be a Hyper-V Lab. Even with the decision to most use Hyper-V Server R2 do I install to the Local file system or would it be better to boot this from USB too. I have found a set of instructions for...
How can I keep Facebook keeping my interest?
I blogged a while back about how Some social media Facebook in particular are helping me engage in a way that I hadn’t expected. But I do have difficulty staying with the plan or regularly checking the site, (sorry I missed the Mikey notice, congrats Mark, Alex and Ethan) imagine my surprise when I saw Fishbowl a Facebook client built in Silverlight that lets me see things in a nicer way even attribute an interest level to people in my network. Suppose Wayne goes on a wild self promotion kick and...
Paint.NET v3.5
Rick Brewster has announced that the final release of Paint.NET 3.5 is now available for download. Paint.NET v3.5 (Final) is now available! November 6, 2009 – 10:21 pm Thanks to everyone who helped out with the extensive alpha and beta releases with all the bug reports, crash log submissions, and feedback. It has all been a huge help in creating the best Paint.NET release ever. I could talk about the use of Direct Write instead of GDI and the other neat features that make this an even better product...
Canberra Security Interchange – IRONKEY not your average “Thumb Drive”
On Wednesday Night I went along to the C-SIG run in the Microsoft Canberra Office especially because I have had some requests about Secure USB Drives from some of our Federal Government customers, the greatest interest I have seen is with the Stealth MPX . Now I don’t know much about the solution built around the Stealth MPX and really most of the time I have been asked to provide some in a bid, so really it is more a procurement exercise. I am keen to add value to my clients mobility solutions and...

Dell Future of Computing
Today I came along to the Dell Future of Computing day in Canberra. The big takeaway today so far is around green computing. The session I am in right now is Virtualisation and being delivered by David Allinson from VMware which will be great from a catching up perspective. From a learning things standpoint there is a cool set of integrations between Openmanage and V3i which does nice fault automation. This is starting to look like the rationalised level of Core IO. So this far, value is provided...
Stop Complaining - Resolve to be more positive
Earlier today I wrote .... So today I feel like a bit of a Partner Group Fan-boy but I am hoping to eradicate any negativity this year and this really has helped with the positivity today. So how am I going to eradicate negativity?? With one of these Bracelets!! OK more explanation required. I was told by someone who's opinion I respect that I can always be relied on to be negative. Bloody Hell what the ...... So I filed that away as an unthinking comment and to not get too negative about it...
Now I can blog anywhere
I was out with my wife when she had a physio appointment and I had an idea that I wanted to blog, but didn't have a way to get it down on paper so to speak. When I looked around the net for a tool that would allow me to blog on Community Server from my Blackjack and have the ability to have posts offline and publish later. I found Diarst by Kevin Daly which when downloaded didn't work on my phone, but here is the amazing part, around Midnight I thought I'd ping Kevin to see if this issue...
System Center Essentials 2007 to support non-Domain Computers
I was reading Gwen Zierdt - The Real World Is Messy , in particular an interview with David Mills, a member of the System Center Essentials 2007 Marketing team. I found this very interesting and of course now want to find a Beta for SP1 so I can check out what else is new. 4) What was the most request feature in Essentials 2007 and why? I would have to say the feature that came up most in my conversations with customers was a request for Essentials 2007 to manage workgroup-joined computers. Many...
Thinking about Authentication
So on my way back from the Trend Micro / SBSFAQ Security Summit, I started to think about secure authentication to not just mine but my customers networks. I thought about password change frequency and complexity issues and how I might ensure a suitable compromise for the level of risk. Now many of my customers have their own accounts but set to the same password, and some all use one account because they used it that way when they were peer to peer and when the risk is explained they don't feel...
How much am I Lurving my Q1 Ultra?
When I wanted a new mobile computer (laptop) I looked around a bit and had considered many options from big Power Houses that support virtualization & lots of RAM, to a cheapy to get smashed about like so many of the things I just throw in the truck and let roll about, but then why not keep the old Evo n800v if that is the requirement. But then I thought to my self what about a Tablet hmmmm I see Grant floating about with his fairly often but for me it is a little big and I would not want to...
Canberra SQL Server User Group --September Meeting
I am thinking of starting to blog events I go to Live and then revisiting the posts when I get a chance to follow up with the speaker so as usual no warranty all care, subject to change when I find out I missed the point. So here goes Athena: spoke about MS certification Key IT Pro take away: 2008 certifications can only be upgraded to through 2003 Certifications so very importantly, Must Consult Someone Experienced (MCSE) 2000-2003 upgrade needs to be done by 31st March 2008. David Note :- Having...
How to check your IP, with a difference! - Nick Whittome - "The Naked MVP"
I recently started checking out SBS Community blogs that I've just found out about or revisiting those that are pure gold. Nick has gone to the top of my read list pure gold AND a tool I will use all the time. How to check your IP, with a difference! For ages I have used whatismyip.com and dnsstuff.com to check the IP I am presenting to the world. I was getting bored of this, but now thanks to www.moanmyip.com I can hear the IP read out by a sexy girl. Horrah! How to check your IP, with a difference...

Redmond Channel Partner Online | News: Microsoft Virtualization Products Face Delays
Redmond Channel Partner has jumped on the Virtualization delays, with a focus on Longhorn Virtualization slipping. Microsoft Virtualization Products Face Delays April 12, 2007 by Keith Ward Several Microsoft virtualization products are seeing their shipping dates slip. The first service pack for Virtual Server 2005 R2 has been delayed from the first quarter of this year to the next quarter. Arguably the bigger news is that the public beta of Windows Server virtualization will slide from the first...

So can I use this for Phone Interviews or Customer Requirements Gathering Teleconferneces?
Saw this in SMH online and thought it very cool for all my evil purposes. The KishKish Lie Detector, for example, can be downloaded free as an "extra" on the popular internet phone service Skype. It is capable of monitoring, in real-time, the stress levels in a person's voice. Its creator, BATM, says higher sound frequencies are a telltale sign that someone is being dishonest. "What all people have in common is that their stress levels are constantly changing within their current...
Microsoft launching new online video service, hoping to tap popularity in sharing clips
So I will be storing Pod casts on the mothership soon. I have been considering a YouTube account for storing podcasts I keep telling folk I will produce, but now it seems that MS will be in that Biz. Cool now to see who has the best AUP and who will want the least rights to my IP and we will be good to go. Let me know if you see any Beta Invitations going begging. So when will I see an Microsoft Flikr equiv and will Live Writer just upload the bits I include in a post. There probably is a set of...

So my killing machine is blogging
My eldest started blogging and well lets just say he is now tooling up for some coolness. Why killing machine you may ask? He is now a Junior Black Belt in Tae Kwon Do before his 8th birthday, but I digress. He has been in my ear about wanting Microsoft Word AND Photoshop what the?? Now he wanted Photoshop because Dav Pilkey apparently uses this as part of the process of building Captain Underpants and Alex wants to be like him. Now not wanting to put my hand too deeply in my pocket I have let him...

Not Virtual Virtual Tape and from SMB to Big Enterprise
I posted about a virtual tape solution I plan to use on my laptop and in my lab to emulate enterprise library functionality, people may ask what I recommend for workgroup implementations where cost and reliability are factors. I really like these Quantum products because they just work with most things I do, also there are features coming that I'm not sure if my NDA briefings let me talk about yet but I will ask the guys when I'm at Storage Networking World later this month if I can talk...
WSUSMon - Free real time monitoring of Windows Software Update Services 2
Very cool and super simple tool for WSUS, after I saw this on Kleefy's Blog , I quickly downloaded and pointed it to the WSUS instance on my SBS 2003 Server. Well in less than two minutes had the tool downloaded , extracted it and was looking at a report. Now where can I try it against a really big installation WSUSMon is a simple, FREE utility that allows you to monitor Microsoft Windows Software Update Services version 2 ( WSUS ) in real time. Source: WSUSMon - Free real time monitoring of...
