I am Weasel
After some time wondering if Project Thieving Weasel would get legs I am happy to announce that this morning, I have signed up to SMB Buddy . So I could rabbit on about what SMB Buddy is and not tell you anything that you will find useful or I could just let you see what the site says: About SMB Buddy SMB Buddy is networking site dedicated to connecting SMB technology partners. In a nutshell, it is a web site that helps consolidate information and resources from all over the web with SMB technology...
Diamonds are a Girls Best Friend
I've been holding this one for a little while so I could be clear of Alex's wrath before getting this one out there. While at the Sydney SMB IT Pro Group earlier in the month the guys from Bright Point demo'd some HTC Phones, and it got some of us to talking about what makes a phone cool: Naturally running Windows Mobile because all SBSers get the full integration out of the box with SBS 2003 R2 and soon SBS 2008; Boys might like a big enough screen to remote a server and reboot it; Nerd...
SMB Network Support needs to be one pane of glass or at least no more than two.
I blogged a long time ago about what I thought "Could" be done to make the SCE removal palatable . Gwen Zierdt left a comment saying "Good analysis on pricing. Stay tuned for some potential licensing promos later this year. " and of course I am waiting patiently. Now I wonder if I even care. Here is what folk said to me Last Tuesday night after the Sydney IT Pro Group "I'm glad SCE 2007 is out! I've got Kaseya Licences to pay for" and this might well be the thing...
Looking for System monitoring? It could be SCE 2007
Firstly thanks Susan for the link and if folk want to know lots about SCE 2007 there is lots out there and when I finish letting my business run my life I'll do some more on http://SMEManaged.com too. Plus some other pretty cool tools I have been finding of late. I'm talking about here and not over on SMEManaged well because I am about to give my opinion and NOT a how and why we do things with what tools. Susan said "Price tag is a concern for me though." and in the top ten list...
SCE 2007: Configuring on SBS 2003 R2 Premium Edition - SQL Workgroup?? or should we install to the Express Instance and be done?
When I asked around about issues people have had deploying SCE 2007 on SBS 2003 R2 Premium, I was told there were some issues with SQL Server (2005 Workgroup Edition). I have not been able to collect the exact issues because many of the people are working from memory. I do know that running SCE 2007 on SBS 2003 R2 Premium DOES work with the Express Database that ships with System Center Essentials 2007, and to be honest this really should be good enough given the cap of 75 Devices in SBS 2003 and...
SCE 2007 Problem Reporting
In the course of developing some of the builds for SCE 2007 on SBS 2003, my server threw an error and asked permission to send error information. As you can see the dialogue box says Please tell SMEManaged01_MG about this problem. I am curious why this does not use the Organisation from the Servers Registration information. I'm of course in search of a way to change this to give the users a better experience. Cross Posted from http://SMEManaged.com
Installing System Center Essentials in SBS 2003 R2 Standard Edition - Computer and Device Management Wizard
I thought about only documenting the Device Management portion because we have a scheduled task to pick up all Servers and Workstations at 3AM Daily, but because I need instant gratification I thought so would many others. I don't actually have any other servers or desktops in the SCE Lodge right now so this would actually discover any computers but I want to follow the deployment process for installing a green field. ...
Installing System Center Essentials in SBS 2003 R2 Standard Edition - Configure Product Features
Assuming you conducted the installation I described for SBS 2003 SP1 / R2 the launch of the Essentials console and subsequent run of the initial configuration process is cancelled so we can cleanup the certificates for the default web....
Installing System Center Essentials in SBS 2003 R2 Standard Edition
There has been a good deal of Community conversation about the suitability of System Center Essentials 2007 for installation on Small Business Server 2003 SP1 / R2 and while I maintain the opinion that all SCE 2007 installs in SBS 2003 Networks should be done on dedicated Windows 2003 R2 Standard Edition servers, this build has (so far) not shown to cause significant issues with the Features or Functionality of the SBS 2003 R2 Server. This guide has been written with a Default Installation of an un-patched version of SBS 2003 R2 as the base. The configuration is Single NIC with Local Router. ...
SCE 2007 Fault Finding: Post Release Hotfix Rollup
When I start an install task, I try to gather as many of the required tools and fixes as possible. I knew there were some hotfixes available and was pretty happy to see there was a rollup which would save me some time. So I grabbed the executable so I could apply the fixes before I ran the configuration wizard especially since I already had one false start and wanted to get a good vanilla install so I could document it. Here's the thing had I read the release notes I would have known this rollup...
